The fifth edition of the Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG 2023) recently came to a close on February 11, 2023. This flagship event, under the Indian government's Khelo India initiative, was hosted across 11 venues in eight cities in Madhya Pradesh and New Delhi.
The KIYG 2023 saw the participation of over 5,000 athletes representing 36 states and Union Territories in India, competing for 973 medals in 27 sports. The sports list expanded from the previous edition, with the inclusion of fencing and water sports such as canoeing, kayaking, and slalom.

Maharashtra emerged as the champion of KIYG 2023 after topping the medal tally with 56 gold medals, 55 silvers, and 50 bronze. Haryana, the champions of the last edition, came in second with 41 golds, 32 silvers, and 55 bronze.
The Khelo India Youth Games operates as a team championship, where the medals won by each athlete or team are counted towards their respective State or Union Territory's medal tally. The State or UT with the highest number of gold medals is declared the winner at the end of the event.
In the inaugural edition of Khelo India Youth Games in 2018, Haryana topped the medal table. However, Maharashtra took the KIYG title in 2019 and 2020. This year, hosts Madhya Pradesh fielded the largest contingent of athletes (474) and came in third with 39 gold, 30 silver, and 27 bronze medals.
Here's a look at the top 10 of the final KIYG 2023 medal table, showcasing the top-performing states and Union Territories.
